Sleepy-Bye

So, while sitting at my laptop, in the library, I fell asleep. Ya know. It's a normal function of the body. And it is a medically proven fact that people who are suffering from sleep deprivation, sleep apnea, and even people with ADHD, can easily fall asleep for reading.

BUT, the old security guard caught me, and "wrote me up." Funny, though, for a violation he wrote "loitering." This was just a warning, he said. If he catches me again, I could be suspended from the library for one day.

Now, I can see, if a person came into the library with the specific intent to find a place to sleep, perhaps he curls up under a desk, whips out a sleeping bag, etc, then I'd say you've found yourself a perp. But, falling asleep while reading, or doing other book/library related work, is not loitering. It is certainly not malicious in nature. It is a victimless crime. I even asked the security guard if my sleeping had disturbed any of the other patrons. He said, "oh no, not at all."

This is just silliness. Just wake me up. If I can't stay awake, then you might need to call me an ambulance. And if some homeless guy has pitched a tent in the non-fiction section, then please, by all means, take appropriate measures. But really, is kicking someone out of the library for the day, the appropriate measure for falling asleep while reading?

  2. You got to be kidding me right? If they have a rule of no sleeping then dont go to sleep. Whats so hard about that. I am tired of people that can't take blame for the own problems. Hell I thing that the cop who gave me a speeding ticket should have just told me to slow down. No use in me being responsible and following the law right? I do have a simple suggestion for you though, IF YOU DON"T LIKE THERE RULES STAY OUT!! Or maybe you would like for them to kiss your butt a little and get you a pillow and blanket next time.

I know that there are some people who are law fanatics, like yourself. And you never really meet a law, or a rule you didn't like. Some people would call your type "control freaks." You aren't happy, or content unless you are in control of very little thing people do. And you have this uncontrollable urge to find yourself "right" all the time. You fear being found to be wrong, and so you kiss up to authority at every opportunity. It sounds like a very sad life for you.

There are two types of people, those who favor the letter of the law, and those who favor the spirit of the law. I am a spirit of the law kind of guy. To me, there has to be a good reason for the law, other than just that it is a law. Speeding in your car is dangerous, and can kill people, including yourself. Sleeping in the library offends no one, and threatens no one, and thus there is no real reason for it except to harass homeless people, cause to face the facts, people are prejudiced against homeless people.

  5. We have too many laws about things we should not have laws about....I am a spirt of the law kind of guy myself...if we started enforcing all the laws 100% of the time, we would be a total police state.....Most people will not :get it: , until its too late to fight back.

  6. So you think it should be up to you what laws and rules to follow? Sorry friend it does not work that way. just take whatever your punishment is and live up to what you did wrong. Don't blame the security people for forcing the rules. Thats just ther job and I am sure they don't make the rules up that has to be enforced

  7. All I am saying is you broke the rule so live with it. Stop trying to make the library look bad for something you did wrong. I am sure they dont mess with you if you follow the rules. And the security there does not write the rules they just get paid to enforce them so why make rude statement about them.

  8. And all I'm saying is that there is no need for this rule, which is motivated by something other creating order.

  9. AND I GUESS YOU ARE THE ONE WHO DECIDES WHAT RULES ARE NEEDED AND WHAT RULES ARE NOT. I DON'T WANT TO GO IN A LIBRARY AND IT LOOK LIKE A HOTEL WITH PEOPLE SLEEPING ALL OVER THE PLACE. AND YOU KNOW IF THEY DID NOT FORCE THIS RULE THATS WHAT THE LIBRARY WOULD TURN INTO A SHELTER WHERE PEOPLE CAN SLEEP ALL DAY

  10. People, homeless or otherwise, have a natural tendency to fall asleep when they read. And a person asleep in a chair with a book in his lap does not constitute a "shelter where people sleep all day." And as I originally stated, all that is needed is to wake the person up. Kicking a person out of the library for falling asleep is ridiculous, heavy handed authoritarianism, and motivated by prejudice against homeless people. It would be a different matter if people were purposely going into the library with the intent of finding a place to sleep. But that is just not the case.
